Mother and Child

A mother facing her child in a moment of gentle connection

My babies are all grown up now. The eldest just turned 29. My son is 21 turning 22 and my youngest is 15. My stepdaughter is 16. But boy, did this image evoke a feeling in me—of being that protector and that guide, and holding that responsibility gently, but seriously, in my heart.

I love how it looks like this mother is sharing something with her child—teaching. Whether she knows it for sure or not, it’s likely that her child will remember—if not the actual words, then the feeling. The feeling of being held by its mother. Knowing safety. Knowing calm. Knowing someone was always looking out for him.

I see this now with my eldest daughter, who just had her first child—which now makes me a grandmother. And I’m so proud to watch her in her element, giving her son all the love he deserves.
